We raise coturnix quail, often called Japanese or Pharoah Quail. Unlike the native Bobwhite Quail, coturnix have been bred for thousands of years to produce meat and eggs, and also as song birds.
They are fast growing, gentle and extremely productive, often out-laying chickens! Almost all quail eggs and meat you see in stores are from coturnix quail. They make wonderful urban livestock because of their small size and relatively quiet call.
There are scores of different colors of coturnix, but they are all the same species. At Pettibone Urban Game we have a beautiful mix of colors that have been selected for either egg or meat production.

Quail eggs have been enjoyed by people for hundreds of years all around the world. They are rich and delicious and one quail egg is higher in potassium and iron than a whole chicken egg! They can be used just as any other egg, or you can showcase them in a special dish. Around here, we like to use them to top homemade pizzas and burgers.
